Taylor Swift is not prepared to "sacrifice" her independence by being in a relationship.

The 24-year-old singer has dated many high-profile men in the past, including John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal and Harry Styles.

She's been single for a long time now though because she is tired of her romantic life hitting the headlines, plus she likes calling the shots in her life.

"I've learnt that just because someone is cute and wants to date you, that's not a reason to sacrifice your independence and allow everyone to say whatever they want about you. I'm not doing that anymore," she told British magazine Cosmopolitan.

Taylor has spoken extensively about how sexist she believes the coverage of her dating life has been. She is tired of people thinking it is OK for them to pass judgement on her, explaining it's something she discusses with her friends, such as Girls creator Lena Dunham, a lot.

"My girlfriends and I talk a lot about feminism and the inequality between the way men and women are talked about. The kind of things we say are, 'Why is it mischievous, fun and sexy if a guy has a string of lovers that he's cast aside, loved and left?

Yet if a woman dates three or four people in an eight-year period she is a serial dater and it gives some 12-year-old the idea to call her a sl*t on the internet?' It's not the same for boys, it just isn't and that's a fact," she said.

Taylor finds the scrutiny of her love life so hard to handle that she is happier not trying to find love at the moment. She hopes that sends a positive message to her fans too, especially as she's as happy as she's ever been "going it alone".

In the past Taylor has used her relationships and break-ups for inspiration, with her track Dear John famously said to be about John Mayer. Her latest record 1989 is about her love now and her current state of mind.

"You like being alone and not because you're hurt, not because you're sad, but because it's free," she said.
