‘Coexist’ by The xx was the biggest selling vinyl album of 2012 in the UK but David Bowie’s 40-year old classic ‘The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust’ wasn’t far behind.
According to the Official Chart Company, Brits bought 389,000 vinyl albums during 2012. Vinyl sales increased 15.1% in 2012, in line with similar increases in the USA.
“With more than 60 years of loyal service, the vinyl LP is by some margin the most enduring album format of all time. Although sales overall are small compared to CD and digital albums, vinyl’s collectability and appeal to audiophiles is drawing in new fans, in particular through initiatives like the popular annual Record Store Day. Increasingly LPs also include codes that can be redeemed online for digital albums – giving fans the best of both worlds,” BPI Chief Executive Geoff Taylor said.
Australia’s Tame Impala had the 5th biggest vinyl seller in the UK with ‘Lonerism’.
