Sometimes as a reviewer it is probably better not to know who you are listening to before passing judgement. Julian Lennon must be used to being compared - musically - to his father by now, but it must be hugely irritating. But those comparisons are hard to avoid.
Having released his first album for more than 10 years, Everything Changes has been well received. Guess It Was Me is the second single lifted from it; a gentle slice of pop rock with a fuzzy little guitar solo thrown in. It never quite gets out of second gear but contains more than a whiff John Lennon and The Beatles. The production only adds to the obvious vocal comparison.
"I had to learn my own way" is a repeated refrain and it couldn't be more pertinent. Proving to have diverse interests and talents, Lennon has recently been focussing on his photography, with exhibitions around the world. So perhaps he has found his own way.
But musically there is never going to be any way to shed the obvious and brilliant benchmark of his family genes. That connection has more pluses than minusses and you get the feeling Julian no longer lets it be a burden. He thinks his latest offering is his best work yet and this single shows that he is now making music he enjoys and not music he thinks he should be making.
