If their debut EP is a taster of things to come then I am practically salivating for the full length album.
British group Saturday Night Gym Club’s debut EP “How to Build a Life Raft” is a luminous collection of Animal Collective esque songs which tower themselves over the dance floor and rockets into space.
Blending 80s tinged synths, sliced rhythms with tons of sun drenched atmosphere; they create a sonically glorious and unique racket. Opening track “I know” is an excellent slice of a summer day but aurally, combining chillwave synths, glitchy dubstep rhythms with the smooth vocals of Ellie Walker.
The opening track definitely sets the bar high for the rest of the EP but SNGC don’t drop the ball and keep up sonic splendour throughout. “A Green Light” could of easily of been made in the 1980s with its fisherman sharp hooks, catchy keys and punchy drums.
"The Ballroom Scene" follows and is a melodic piece of electronica, presenting echoing keys on top of shimmering beats, one of the EP's more sedate moments.
The title track is the EPs most like Animal Collective moment, reverbed soaked vocals over the top of swirling synths and funky drums.
"Lituya Bay" ends the EP on a more experimental yet delicate moment, with the group replacing their synths with pianos and strings but you know its got that SNGC sound to it because the track showcases the SNGC glitchy cut up beats underneath the smooth piano and relaxing strings.
With a EP this strong and refreshing, the future looks bright for this up and coming band. This could cement them as the British equal to Animal Collective and that ain't a bad thing at all.
